The Choice Of Living On Less

you-have-no-money.jpg

Naomi and I have had some great discussions lately about our standard of living and our overall household expenses. Since leaving my job (and leaving my nice sized paycheck), some significant adjustments in our lifestyle were necessary. This was something that we had planned for and fully expected going into this new & exciting adventure of church planting. Fortunately, we are in a position of being debt free except for our mortgage. We would have never been able to do what we are doing if we had car payments, credit cards bills, and installment loans.

We have cut out expenses based on our values and our financial goals. Here are a few of the things that we have done recently to live on less…

  • We shopped for cheaper car insurance. We increased our deductible, lowered our tort option and are now saving $200/month.
  • We lowered our cell phone plan and saved $20/month.
  • We have limited our going out to eat to 1 x/week which has saved us at least $200/month.
  • We canceled cable! You might think that’s weird, but we simply don’t need it, not to mention that the rates are going up next month. This saved us $114/month.
  • We are working on refinancing our mortgage which should lower our interest rate by 1%.
Total monthly savings so far = $534/month

Do you have any expense cutting tips? Let’s hear them…
